THE
NEWS LETTER OF HERMON CHURCH
Dear Family,
What
a wonderful Springtime we are having! The emergence of the sun
through the clouds this past Sunday was like a tonic for my spirits.
I am reminded of when George Santayana, a philosopher and professor
at Harvard, was delivering his last lecture to a packed hall. Toward
the end of his remarks, he glanced out the window, abruptly stopped
his lecture, picked up his hat and headed for the door, with the
statement, “I have an appointment with April.” Easter will soon be
upon us (Read carefully the schedule of Holy Week services.). What a
perfect time to celebrate new life in the midst of the annual
victory of Spring over the bleakness of Winter!
The
Session is busy preparing for the interim period. Surveys indicate
that most Hermon we have an involved laity which is stepping up and
assuming valuable roles for the interim period. Ed will be in the
pulpit; Sandra Shaw will cover emergencies; the laity are ready,
willing and able to lead the church.
Robin and I want to invite you all to our home for an open house on
Saturday, April 25th, 2 to 4 pm. (Directions below).
Please RSVP to 703-533-0132, line #3, or
revgfb@verizon.net
It
is painful, but also a great joy to worship, fellowship, and witness
with you in these last four weeks. How neat that in my final month
as a parish minister that I get to do a baptism (Fiona Sophie,
Buxton), a wedding (Mariel Davenport), and welcome three new members
(Bernard and Eric Bailey, Henri Beenhakker.)!
Your
love, responsiveness and faithfulness have been an inspiration to
Robin and to me. We want to party with you to celebrate our ministry
together.
His and yours,
Graham

WHAT ARE PRAYER SHAWLS?AWLS?
Recently Anne Eason learned of a practice whereby women in a church
knit prayer shawls. The shawls are then dedicated in the church
service and are anonymously given to people with physical,
psychological, or spiritual needs. As individuals in need wrap
themselves in the shawls they are reminded that they are wrapped in
the love of God
and the prayers
of their family in he church. There is no hint here of
supernaturalism, but rather a simple act of compassion by which
those in need are comforted and affirmed. Anne is inviting others to
join in this meaningful ministry. Call her at 301-365-1979.
LECTIONARY PASSAGES
The
lectionary is a cycle of passages that are used over a three year
period. Most of the main stream denominations use the lectionary,
and Ed Bauman will continue to use them as we have in the past. His
sermon titles and specific passages will be in he May issue of
News from the Steeple. Read ahead and we promise you that
worship will be more meaningful.
Eastertide continues until Pentecost. White is the liturgical color
for Easter, and red is the color for Pentecost, the color of fire
that enflamed the lives of the disciples and created the church.
